Highlights in Your Santorini Holidays
Santorin, better known as Santorini, is a Greek archipelago and belongs to the Cyclades archipelago in the Aegean Sea. The Santorini archipelago includes the following 5 islands: Thira, Thirasia and Aspronisi (these 3 form the edge of the caldera) and Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni, the two islands located in the interior. Hike from Fira to Oia
Fira is the capital of the island of Thira and next to Oia it is probably home to the most hotels. Oia is tourist spot No. 2 and an especially popular photo motif for the impressive sunsets on Santorini. The two towns are connected by a beautiful hiking trail along the caldera, which can take two to five hours depending on your condition. We recommend packing sunscreen, a sun hat, good shoes and enough water to be prepared for everything. And if you are hiking in the warm summer months it is best to start early.
Sunset in Oia
Oia is a small picturesque village in the north of the island and its narrow streets and whitewashed houses make it a popular photo location. In the evening, many tourists flock to Oia to enjoy the sunset and take the perfect photo. We recommend that you book a table in good time in one of the many restaurants with a terrace. This way you can relax and enjoy the sunset over a delicious dinner.
Jumping into the Sea!
When on Santorini, there is of course also the opportunity to take a dip in the cool waters. Especially after an intensive sightseeing tour, cooling off in the sea is just the perfect thing. Probably the most famous beach is Red Beach - the name says it all. The longest and finest sandy beach is Perivoli Beach in the north of the island. Kamari Beach in the east is considered the most beautiful. You can relax here and then and end the evening in a good restaurant in the village of Kamari.
Hike on the Volcanic Island Nea Kameni
The island of Nea Kameni is the heart of the volcano. There are numerous offers on site to explore the island. Most tours start from Ammoudi Bay, the old port of Fira. You can explore the craters and hike on the top of the island. Either you book only a small tour to the island directly, or make a day trip out of it and sail from island to island of the Santorini archipelago. Usually you also have the opportunity to swim in volcanic sulfur water - so don't forget your swimsuit.
Wineries and Wine Tasting
When one thinks of Santorini, wine growing is not the first thing that comes to mind. However, Santorini is known for its excellent white wines. They are grown on the islands of Thira and the small sister island of Thirasia. Hence, wine tours are on the to-do list of many island visitors. It is best to book a tour that usually visits three wineries. Well-known wineries are Venetsanos, Santo Wines, Argyros, Vassaltis and Gavalas. However, all of them are well worth a visit. Profitis Ilias – Top of Santorini
A trip to the highest point of the island (565 metres above sea level) is worthwhile for two reasons. The first is the beautiful view, and the second is the Profitis Ilias Monastery, which was built in the early 18th century and resembles a fortress. The Saint Nectarios Chapel also belongs to the monastery, but it is not open to the public. Combine this excursion with a visit to the beautiful village of Pygros.
