Winter paradise Luleå: ice, cuisine and culture
Luleå offers unique experiences in winter: winter fun for the whole family at Isbanan, an ice rink on the frozen archipelago, with Northern Lights safaris, saunas on the ice – and plenty of culture. Walk on the sea
During winter, the boundary between land and water becomes blurred in Luleå. When the archipelago freezes over, a unique winter experience emerges: Isbanan. A 10-kilometre-long ice rink on the Gulf of Bothnia invites visitors to skate, walk or ride a kick sled (spark). Along the route, there are mulled wine stands, barbecue areas and free equipment – winter fun on the frozen sea!
Church culture and UNESCO World Heritage
Gammelstad is a 17th-century church village that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since churches were not regularly accessible to many farmers or nomads in the past, weekend services were held several times a year, including overnight accommodation. One of the 404 preserved cottages is open to the public as a museum, while the others are privately owned. Only people who were born here are allowed to stay overnight.
Experience Sámi culture up close
The nature of Swedish Lapland may appear untouched, but it has been used for reindeer herding for many generations. From December to March, Dálvvás founder Marita Sikku introduces visitors to the model farm to the indigenous culture of the Sámi: visiting a reindeer herd, enjoying a traditional lunch of reindeer meat, flatbread and coffee around the campfire in a Lávvun tent, accompanied by Sámi stories and music.
Culture for all weathers
An ideal place to warm up and enjoy Luleå's cultural offerings is Kulturens Hus. Here you will find changing exhibitions, concerts and a library with a view of the sea. The interactive Teknikens Hus delights families with hands-on technology. While the famous Norrbottens Museum is being renovated, its exhibitions are taking place virtually and at various locations in and around Luleå.
Enjoy culinary delights in Norrbotten
Gourmet cuisine meets Arctic wilderness: Luleå's top restaurants Restaurant Cg, Hemmagastronomi and Bistron are listed in Sweden's ‘White Guide’. Regional specialities such as reindeer, elk, fjällröding (a type of char) and berries find their way onto the plates. Norrbotten's cuisine is characterised by clear flavours, sustainable hunting and fishing – deeply rooted in the nature of the north.
The cathedral, a masterpiece in brick
The cathedral is Sweden's northernmost cathedral and impresses with its neo-Gothic architecture made of red brick. Built in 1893 according to plans by architect Adolf Emil Melander, its tower rises 67 metres. The bright interior features one of northern Sweden's largest organs with 4,500 pipes. Alongside the Nederluleå Kyrka church in the church village, built in 1492, the Kreuzkirche is one of Luleå's landmarks.
Ice bathing, a chilling pleasure
A real highlight in Luleå: sauna sessions followed by an ice bath, an activity that combines two popular Nordic traditions. In small wooden huts on the frozen sea, lake or river, you sweat yourself warm – and then jump straight into the ice hole. This is not only invigorating, but also deeply rooted in Nordic culture. A must for the brave, preferably under the guidance of professionals.
Lights, camera, action!
This motto applies not only to film, but also to attempts to capture the Northern Lights effectively. On a guided tour led by a professional photographer, you will receive tips on camera settings, exposure time, ISO and focus – as well as advice on the most suitable equipment. The tour takes you to the best spots away from light pollution. Ideal for beginners and amateur photographers with their own equipment.
