Luleå - the gateway to holidays in Swedish Lapland

Anyone whose eyes light up at the thought of snowshoeing, ice fishing and the Northern Lights will find their holiday happiness in Swedish Lapland. Endless snow-covered expanses, dancing auroras in the clear night sky and the sound of snow crunching underfoot transform the north-east of Sweden into a true winter paradise.

The adventure begins in Luleå: the city lies around 100 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle and offers access to a wealth of activities. Dog sledding, snowmobile tours, fatbike routes across frozen bays or a dip in an ice hole are just the beginning. If you like, you can drive over the ice or hop on an icebreaker. Hikes in national parks or a visit to the sauna with a sea view are also part of the experience. Luleå is also the ideal starting point for winter tours through Swedish Lapland - be it towards the Finnish border or to Kiruna and Abisko, perhaps the best place to see the Northern Lights.

Glide across the frozen sea on ice skates and experience the city from a different perspective - on the approximately 10-kilometre-long ‘Isbanan’ off Luleå, this is pure meditation. (Photo Credit: Burban Studios, Visit Luleå)
  • Panorama-Luftaufnahme der Kirchenstadt Gammelstad im Winter in der Abenddämmerung
Not far from Luleå is Gammelstad, a unique UNESCO World Heritage Site. More than 400 red wooden houses are grouped around a medieval stone church and are an impressive testimony to Nordic history.

Climb in, glide off and the world suddenly becomes silent. Only the panting of the dogs and the crunching under the sled - simply magical. (Photo Credit: Fredrik Broman, Swedish Lapland)
  • Samisch gekleideter Mann und Junge in Luleå
The famous winter market takes place in Jokkmokk at the beginning of February. With reindeer sleighs, Joik songs and Sami handicrafts. If you are there at this time, you should not miss it. (Photo Credit: Håkan Stenlund, Swedish Lapland)
