Holidays in Kefalonia: divine beaches, Greek spirit and island hopping

Is Kefalonia actually Ithaca, Odysseus’ native island? A study from 2018 attempted to credit this theory, but the fact is we simply don’t know. But one thing’s as clear as the water surrounding this iconic island: a holiday in Kefalonia is perfect for anyone looking for sand, sun and relaxation away from crowded hotspots.

In the town of Lixouri on the Paliki peninsula, bathing beaches dot the coastline like a string of pearls. You can really feel the spirit of the island here. If you enjoy the Greek flair of the picturesque little towns, take a detour to Argostoli on the southwest coast or to the relaxed port town of Sami on the east coast. Kefalonia is also known for its Mount Ainos. Towering godlike over the island, it stands a silent witness to the many conquests the island has already endured. Their influence can still be felt in many ways today, such as in the island’s architecture, cuisine and culture. A holiday on Kefalonia is great for island hopping. You can reach Zakynthos directly by ferry and the other Ionian islands, such as Corfu and the region around Preveza, via the Greek mainland.
