Holidays in São Vicente - the home of Saudade
This Cape Verdean island is a particularly good place to escape the winter: São Vicente is sunny all year round and less touristy than Sal or Boa Vista. In terms of variety, however, it is in no way inferior. Whether volcano hiking in the Parque Natural Monte Verde, kitesurfing on the beach of Salamansa or snorkelling off the coast of São Pedro - São Vicente is lively and at the same time relaxed.
A visit to the capital Mindelo shows: This is where the creative heart of Cape Verde beats. It is the birthplace of the legendary Morna singer Cesaria Evora and the longing she sang about, ‘Saudade’, lives on. When the sun goes down, street musicians transform the centre into a lively mosaic of rhythm, sound and emotion. Tradition can also be found in Mindelo's cuisine: for example at Pica Pau, which was one of the first restaurants to open at the time of Cape Verdean independence.
