Holidays on the Cape Verdean island of Santiago - sun, rhythm, sea
Anyone travelling to Santiago quickly realises that green is relative. Instead of palm trees, the landscape is mainly characterised by acacias and succulents. And yet Santiago is the greenest of all the Cape Verdean islands, as the Serra Malagueta National Park proves.
The vibrant capital Praia, perched on a high plateau, offers a marvellous view of the sea and an insight into the eventful history of the Cape Verdean islands. Young people dance capoeira in the streets, Funaná blares from loudspeakers and the bars smell of fried fish and grogue, sugar cane schnapps. It is the mixture of Portuguese, African and Brazilian influences that makes Praia so distinctive. A tip: settle down in a cosy bar and enjoy the colourful goings-on over a cafézinho - or simply relax on the beaches of Quebra Canela and Prainha.
