Edelweiss is Launching a New Culinary Concept

Edelweiss, Switzerland’s leading leisure travel airline, is launching a new culinary concept that includes innovative inflight tableware and will be introduced on 1st December 2019. In collaboration with Autogrill, Edelweiss will also open the “Edelweiss Café” at Zurich Airport in spring 2020.

Edelweiss flies to more than 72 holiday destinations in 32 countries, and the airline’s route network is growing steadily. In the words of Edelweiss CEO Bernd Bauer: “Every new dream destination means we have the great privilege of transporting more international passengers who choose to fly with us. We are delighted to whet the appetite of our Swiss and our international guests to discover the world’s most beautiful places with us.”

Local cuisine for national and international flight passengers

“From 1st December, our passengers can revel in happy holiday memories as they savour culinary specialities from the destination they are departing from,” Markus Gander, Edelweiss’s Chief Product Officer, explains. In keeping with the new Edelweiss concept, the airline’s catering experts at the various holiday destinations will prepare typical local dishes that will be served on board, along with well-known Swiss dishes. “By way of introducing destination-specific cuisine, we want to extend the holiday experience for our homebound swiss passengers while surprising our international passengers with familiar food from their home country.” In addition, the local meals made with local ingredients allow Edelweiss to support a sustainable value creation in the respective holiday destinations.

The airline will, of course, continue to serve traditional Swiss food and Swiss products on board, including the popular bread rolls from the Bertschi bakery in Kloten and Bonatura Birchermüesli produced in Kerzers. As a new and refreshing addition, passengers can also enjoy Alpine Ice Tea, a beverage consisting of organic alpine herbs and fresh mountain spring water, made exclusively for Edelweiss by the Simmental-based Swiss Alpine Herbs company.

Less disposable plastic thanks to the new Edelweiss Box

This December will also see the introduction of the Edelweiss Box in Economy Class. The practical and innovative box is reusable and has several other features, including a large multifunctional lid that can be used as a plate as well as to cover meals without the need for additional clasps made of disposal plastic.

From 1st February 2020, the meals served in Business Class will be presented in newly designed tableware. According to Markus Gander, the new tableware has several advantages: “Its modern, lightweight design affords our Business Class an entirely new and modern look.”

Edelweiss Café at Zurich Airport

Edelweiss is breaking new ground – with the opening of the Edelweiss Café in Zurich Airport’s Check-in 1 in 2020. The new café means that the airline’s warm hospitality will be extended to guests on the ground as well above the clouds: “Whether you are saying goodbye to your loved ones before boarding a flight, or escaping the daily grind by delving into the inspiring world of holiday destinations: the Edelweiss Café is intended as a place to meet, share and for emotional moments,” says Bernd Bauer. The new café is being built in collaboration with Autogrill at the current location of “Coffee & Friends”, in front of the boarding pass control in Zurich Airport’s Check-in 1. It will be opened in spring 2020.
