Edelweiss to Add Three Airbus A320 Aircraft to Its Fleet

Edelweiss, Switzerland’s leading leisure travel airline, will add three Airbus A320 aircraft to its short- and medium-haul fleet next year. This will bring the airline’s fleet total to fifteen aircraft by the end of 2018.

As announced a few months ago, Edelweiss will offer flight services to eight new holiday destinations in the short- and medium-haul range next year. Edelweiss CEO Bernd Bauer is delighted with the fleet expansion that was announced today: “The three additional aircraft will enable us to implement our plans with our own aircraft. We can even increase the number of flights to our most important holiday destinations. For example, we will be able to offer daily flights to Las Palmas, Tenerife and Palma de Mallorca.”

Two of the aircraft will commence flight operations in April 2018, the third one as of June 2018. The aircraft will be leased from Edelweiss’ parent company, the Lufthansa Group, and from the leasing company Macquarie.

Staff expansion thanks to new aircraft

This fleet expansion also translates into an increase in Edelweiss staff: “In order to operate three additional Airbus A320 aircraft, we need new staff and will create 81 new jobs in Switzerland. We are looking to hire 27 pilots and 54 Cabin Crew members to operate the additional aircraft,” CEO Bernd Bauer adds.

As previously announced, two further A340 long-haul aircraft will also join the Edelweiss fleet in the course of 2018, which will bring the airline’s fleet total to fifteen aircraft by the end of next year - nine Airbus A320, two Airbus A330 and four Airbus A340.
