North Macedonia

Mountains, Lakes and a Bright Future

Perched on the peak of Mount Vodno, the Millenium Cross towers majestically over Skopje. The cross stands as a symbol for the future of a city marked by destruction and reconstruction. Skopje’s setting captivates with breathtaking landscapes and so mirrors what North Macedonia and the entire Balkan Peninsula have in abundance.

The Mother Teresa Memorial House built near where Skopje’s most famous daughter and Nobel Peace Prize laureate was born is, unsurprisingly, one of the city’s most important landmarks. Skopje’s eclectic mix of Christian and Ottoman culture and architecture is what lends the city its charm. Struck by a devastating earthquake in 1963 and later marred by the war, the topics of development and the future are central in Skopje.

For water sports enthusiasts and climbers

Anyone exploring Skopje will see its rich history reflected in the diversity of the city’s edifices, many of which are located in the town centre around North Macedonia Square. A visit to the Old Bazaar and the Daut Pasha Bath building, which today houses the national gallery, is recommended.

The idyllic Matka Lake and Matka Canyon are not far from Skopje. Known for its impressive cliffs, Matka Canyon is a popular climbing destination. The pretty town of Ohrid roughly 100 miles from Skopje is a magnet for tourists during the hot and dry summer months. The eponymous lake is one of the oldest in the world and home to 140 different animal species. With a choice of sailing, canoeing, surfing, scuba diving and swimming, Lake Ohrid is also a top spot for water sports enthusiasts.

For hikers and Karl May fans

Hikers and bikers in search of mountains can cross the border into Albania to enjoy the impressive Dinaric Alps. But North Macedonia also has its own share of mountainous regions, including the area surrounding Strumica which served as the setting for two novels by the late German adventure writer Karl May. So, dear adventurers, what are you waiting for? The Balkans are yours to explore!

A City Like a Child – Cheeky, Confident and Incredibly Charming!
