The Magic of the Maldives

Venture on a voyage of cultural discovery, swim with sea turtles or listen to fascinating stories told by the locals: there’s plenty to do in the Maldives besides working on your tan.

Discovering the sights in the beach holiday paradise of the Maldives couldn’t be easier: just immerse yourself into the invitingly warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Because, without a doubt, the Maldives’ unrivalled attraction are the colourful underwater worlds surrounding the Maldivian archipelago of almost 1200 islands. The islands of Ellaidhoo, Eriyadu and Vilamendhoo boast an impressive house reef and offer a unique setting for scuba divers and snorkelers. Besides colourful fish, these waters are home to reef sharks, whale sharks, turtles and mantas.

Culture in paradise

Ready to take a break from scuba diving? The Masjid-al-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu-al-A'z'am mosque in the Maldivian capital of Malé is definitely worth a visit. Featuring a golden dome and impressive carvings, the mosque offers an oasis of calm in this lively city. Sultan Park is nearby and attracts with tropical plants, parrots and songbirds. Many of the islands take no more than a few minutes to walk around, allowing visitors to discover an infinite number of beautiful spots. That said, the best way to get to know the Maldives is by island hopping.

Visiting the locals

It is only since 2009 that guesthouses may offer their services on islands inhabited by local Maldivians. Before that, tourists and local residents were strictly separated. Nowadays, it is easy to travel by ferry from island to island and thus get a glimpse of everyday life in the Maldives, as well as chat with the residents and gain some insight into their culture. This way, you can be sure to go home with more than just a perfect tan!
