The best hotels in Halifax
In the heart of the city: Cambridge Suites Hotel
The Cambridge Suites Hotel is so central that almost all the main attractions of this beautiful coastal city are within walking distance. First and foremost of these is Citadel Hill, Halifax’s most impressive historic site, immediately opposite the hotel. As the name suggests, the hotel exclusively offers suites, each with one or two spacious rooms, all with panoramic windows. For those who want an even better view of Halifax: the rooftop terrace is open from 05:00 to 23:00, on one side with a view of the harbour and on the other a view of the city. Breakfast and Wi-Fi are included in the nightly rate at the Cambridge Suites Hotel.
The legend: the Lord Nelson Hotel & Suites
More than 90 years old, but still elegant and with captivating charm: the Lord Nelson Hotel & Suites. Tradition-conscious guests especially will love the wood-panelled and chandeliered lobby, with its more classic furnishing. The hotel restaurant The Arms offers fine dining in a relaxed atmosphere, although the dining area is slightly reminiscent of a typical English pub. The best thing after dinner is to sink into one of the sofas above the hotel lobby and listen to the sound of the piano player. Or you can take another walk in the park in front of this stylishly renovated four-star hotel.
Bright design: the Muir/Autograph Collection
The Muir is part of the Autograph Collection, a collection of independent hotels ranging from premium to luxury in the Marriott portfolio. But the five-star Muir stands out even from this top-class group. Located in the new Queen’s Marque district of Halifax, the hotel offers direct access to the sea. You will appreciate above all its minimalist, elegant interior crafted from natural materials: marble, oak wood, wool and linen create a wonderful synthesis here. Nothing superfluous interferes with the pure luxury of the 109 rooms and suites. Even the fitness centre and spa area follow the clean design principle. The only “adornment” on the walls are original paintings, including many by artists from the region.
Cosy: Hotel Halifax
The Hotel Halifax is also located by the sea, overlooking Halifax harbour and the historic city centre. The three-star accommodation is somewhat simpler than the nearby Hotel Muir, but it’s also cheaper. Guests who are not looking for luxury, but rather a comfortable night’s stay, are well served at the Hotel Halifax. Guests praise the hotel for its comfortable beds and its spa area with an indoor pool and amazingly well-equipped fitness centre. Last but not least: the hotel bar serves excellent local craft beers and wines.
Casual: Moxy Halifax Downtown
The Moxy Halifax Downtown is the place to be. This four-star hotel is new to the city and appeals primarily to a younger and hipper crowd. You don’t check in at a front desk (too old-fashioned), but over your first (free) drink at the hotel bar. Rooms are colourful and equipped with walk-in showers, smart technology, fast and complimentary Wi-Fi, and TVs that of course offer all the major streaming services. An interactive lounge and library are popular gathering places for guests at the Moxy Halifax Downtown. Who knows, perhaps you’ll move on later to enjoy the nightlife of Halifax, which you can find just a short distance from the hotel.
Pure romance: Blue Forest Lane Bed and Breakfast
Welcome to Blue Forest Lane Bed and Breakfast! You are very lucky if you manage to grab one of only three double rooms here, all equipped with a bathroom including a whirlpool or bathtub. This romantic mini-hotel is just 20 minutes from the centre of Halifax. But this hotel in the typical Nova Scotia style is surrounded by an enchanting garden with old trees and a variety of evergreen plants, creating the appearance of a rural idyll. Here you can enjoy peace and quiet together with easy access to Halifax if you’re looking for sightseeing and action. Guests at Blue Forest Lane will be treated for breakfast to omelettes, waffles, crêpes, scrambled eggs and fresh croissants.
Friendly newbie: Sandman Signature Dartmouth Hotel & Suites
The three-star Sandman Signature Dartmouth Hotel & Suites has only been open since 2023. It is located just outside the centre of Halifax in the district of Dartmouth. The hotel’s communal rooms can be described as modern and a little playful. The light-flooded entrance hall and reception area is enormous, and right next door there are seating areas with portraits of historic figures hanging on the walls, their faces covered with thick blobs of paint. The 212 rooms of this ambitious newbie create a very breezy-bright impression with their large windows, and the fittings are decorated in subtle colours. Sports fans and families will find a fitness centre and indoor pool with a large slide at the hotel.
