Deluxe beach holiday
On arrival, the first thing most visitors do is to head for the beach and the turquoise sea, to see where they’ll be served cocktails from coconuts while comfortably lounging in a deckchair beneath tall and majestic palm trees. And it’s all-inclusive of course. After soaking up the sun, what could be more enticing than a dip in the sea where a whole new underwater world awaits discovery.
A paradise for scuba divers and snorkelers
The longest reef system of the Dominican Republic is just a few metres away from the beach. Colourful fish, old shipwrecks and gorges are on offer at Playa Bavaro. Don’t forget to pack your diving goggles! An excursion to the coral landscape around Saona Island is definitely worthwhile. With only a fishing village and a tiny settlement to its name, the island gives access to the Piscina Natural, a natural pool in the middle of the sea. Waist-high, crystal-clear water and gigantic starfish on the seabed set the scene for a very special experience!
Remembering former times
Mangrove forests in the Los Haitises National Park are a popular excursion destination and have also served as a setting for numerous Hollywood movies. A multiplicity of caves await exploration. Pictures carved in stone are a reminder of times long past. Today, the population in the forests consists of bat colonies and several species of birds. But with a bit of luck, a dolphin or two may well decide to accompany a boat tour through the inlets.
