Luxury Yachts and Ancient Ruins

Bodrum is deemed to be the most beautiful holiday destination on the Turkish Aegean coast. The many picturesque coves and the sparkling sea enchant yachtsmen and sun worshippers alike. And the ancient sites dotted throughout the region are a must-visit for culture and history enthusiasts.

Featuring lovely whitewashed houses set on the slopes overlooking the beautiful bay, the eponymous little town on the Turkish peninsula of Bodrum is a sight to behold. Not only does it offer stunning views of the over 3000 Aegean islands; it is also a paradise for yachtsmen, surfers and scuba divers. And with numerous islands within easy reach -the Greek holiday island of Kos is just a 30-minute ferry ride away-, island hoppers won’t feel short-changed either.

Dolphins and tangerine trees

As the new luxury marina suggests, Bodrum has established itself as a weekend retreat for rich Turkish urbanites. However, this has in no way diminished its Mediterranean charm. The famous wooden gulet boats offer a great mode of transport to explore the coast and to watch dolphins and swordfish. Gulets depart from the town harbour. Bodrum’s old town features picturesque alleyways and inviting restaurants that serve mezze and raki under tangerine, fig and quince trees. Temperatures in Bodrum are mild all year round, and the weather is almost always dry from April to October.

In the House of the Virgin Mary

Bodrum’s landmark is the Castle of St. Peter built by the Knights Hospitalier in the 15th century. Other places of interest are situated in the north of the peninsula and include the ancient Roman sites of Miletus and Ephesus. Ephesus is one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the Mediterranean region. The House of the Virgin Mary nearby is where Mary is said to have spent her final years. The small fishing village of Gündogan is also worth visiting. Gündogan is Turkish for “sunrise”. Now that sounds promising!
