Home to “Nessie” and Macbeth

Shrouded in myth and steeped in history, Inverness in the Scottish Highlands is the perfect destination for fans of history and mysticism. But hiking and sports enthusiasts definitely won’t be short-changed either.

Inverness is located at the mouth of the River Ness at the southwestern extremity of the Moray Firth. The city’s attractions include St. Andrew’s Cathedral, the Old High Church and, of course, Inverness Castle. The castle is where the infamous Macbeth, who was the subject of William Shakespeare’s eponymous tragedy, ruled in the eleventh century. Situated six miles from Inverness is Loch Ness. The loch has a depth of 755 feet (230 m) and is among the bodies of water with the most fish in Britain. If legends are to be believed, there have been several sightings of the Loch Ness monster (“Nessie”) – a “fact” that draws many holidaymakers to northern Scotland.

Hiking along the Caledonian Canal

Loch Ness is an integral part of the Caledonian Canal. The canal was constructed in 1822 to connect the Atlantic Ocean with the North Sea coast. Perched beside Loch Ness is Urquhart Castle, which is a staple stop for tours of the area. The Great Glen Way provides a path for hikers and cyclists who wish to discover the Highlands on foot or by bike. A hike across the entire route takes five to seven days. Despite fairly warm temperatures in summer, the climate is ideal for active holidays. However, since rain is frequent, weather conditions should always be taken into account when planning a holiday in Scotland.

History galore

A further major historic site is located just east of Inverness: in 1746, Culloden Moor was the scene of the final battle between the rebellious Jacobites and English government troops.

Kyle of Lochalsh, a ninety-minute car drive from Inverness, is where the Skye Bridge provides a crossing to the Isle of Skye. The island is home to a plethora of excavation sites and well-preserved duns and cairns, which are historical towers and stone piles that date back to the Iron Age and the Bronze Age. Clava cairn, situated east of Inverness, is a well-known example of these megalith constructions. Whether drawn to Scotland for its history, for sports activities or to see “Nessie” – you won’t be bored in the Scottish Highlands!
