Edelweiss tip

Sardinia is a great choice for golfing holidays. There are eight golf clubs in the Cagliari region and another three golf courses spread across the rest of the island . Our insider tip for playing golf in Cagliari is the Is Molas Golf Club. Situated approximately 25 miles west of Cagliari, Is Molas offers 27 holes, i.e. an 18-hole championship course and a 9-hole course. The Is Molas Resort is set in a stunning location, and the hotel features comfortable rooms embedded in the Sardinian landscape.

Golf Cagliari (Sardinia)

Golf in the Cagliari area

Cagliari, the capital of the Italian island of Sardinia, is famous for its hilltop Castello district that sits majestically above the rest of the city and is partially enclosed by a medieval wall. The city’s architectural highlights include Cagliari Cathedral, which dates back to the thirteenth century. The National Archaeological Museum (a former armoury) houses bronze statuettes, Roman ceramics and artefacts from the Nuragic to the Byzantine age. If Cagliari is your base, you can reach all of the eight golf clubs by car within less than an hour.

Is Molas Resort

27 holes with views of Sardinia‘s turquoise-coloured sea: Is Molas is one of Italy’s most famous golf courses and has been the benchmark of the sport on the island for more than thirty years. Protected by the surrounding hills and situated near the sea, Is Molas boasts a unique microclimate that is mild year-round and particularly favourable for golf: temperatures reach 20 degrees Celsius in early spring, climb to above 30 degrees Celsius in summer and can easily exceed 15 degrees Celsius even in December and January.

Is Molas was the first golf course to be built on the island and, with 27 holes, is also the largest. The eighteen holes of the championship course are the result of a collaboration between the Cotton, Pennink & Partners Studio and Piero Mancinelli. The greens and bunkers are American in size and style, whereas the fairways are wide enough to forgive a slice. The Is Molas championship course is considered one of the most spectacular and technically satisfying courses, not just in Italy but in the entire Mediterranean area. It has been the venue of numerous prestigious tournaments, including four Italian Opens and a European Volvo Masters.

The nine holes of the Yellow Course, which is the hardest to play, were designed by Franco Piras, the representative of Gary Player Design in Italy. The presence of all of Sardinia‘s typical species of indigenous flora and the Mediterranean macchia along the course makes the Is Molas Golf Club a beautiful garden overlooking the sea.

The Club House is elegant and well-equipped, featuring a bar with a panoramic terrace, a pro shop and the “Ristorante Is Molas”, open at lunchtime and for special occasions, where creative Mediterranean dishes made with locally sourced ingredients are served.

Tips in closing

In addition to an excellent year-round golf infrastructure, Cagliari has a very balanced climate during nine months of the year. Temperatures only soar in June, July and August. The wind factor on the island is relevant for golfers and, in some cases, may have a slightly stronger impact. Therefore, always make sure you are equipped with sunscreen and eye protection.

A rental car is also recommended, for transport to the various golf courses. With the exception of the month of August, public transport on the island tends to be rather limited, which is why renting a car makes good sense. Several travel operators and golf clubs, have some great package deals that can considerably reduce costs for golfing and accommodation.
