Mountain activities

The island’s highest mountains are but an hour’s drive from the coast. The steep rock faces, cliffs and gorges -created from volcanic eruptions and erosion over the course of thousands of year- are a magnet for climbing enthusiasts. Widely considered the natural landmark of Gran Canaria, the Roque NubIo monolith and surrounding area are especially popular among climbers. That said, the many paths through palm groves, mountain landscapes and volcanic craters make this island an equally popular choice for hiking fans. The Maspalomas dunes figure among the island’s most renowned sights and are best explored on foot. Declared goal: the sea.

Aquatic fun

Gran Canaria’s myriad beaches are an invitation to relax and refuel. On Playa del Inglés, for instance, that entices visitors with beach life by day and pubs, bars and restaurants by night. Or the artificially constructed Playa de Amadores (“Beach of Lovers“) that features lovely white sand and is a favourite among locals and tourists alike. Palmitos Park is a great family outing after a day at the beach. The park houses a botanical garden and a zoo. Those seeking additional action and excitement can expand their horizons by plunging into the underwater world that is inhabited by rays, angel sharks and cuttlefish.
