Portugal’s Gem

The landmark of the Algarve in southern Portugal are the ochre cliffs. The Algarve region and its capital Faro entice with beautiful beaches and historic sights.

Boasting a Mediterranean climate and oodles of sunshine, Faro has the perfect prerequisites for a relaxing beach holiday.;;; ;;; From popular holiday resorts to the remote island of Barreta: the Algarve coast amazes with a remarkable choice of beaches to suit all tastes and wishes. Today, the former fishing villages of Albufeira and Portimao are well-known tourist spots. The latter includes the beach of Praia da Rocha which is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most exclusive nightlife hotspots.

Vilamoura merits special mention. The purpose-built leisure resort encompasses some of the region’s most stunning beaches. A golfer’s paradise and home to one of the largest marinas in Europe, the resort caters to the bespoke needs of every visitor and guest.

Faro’s sights are predominantly located in the city’s historic old town and include numerous churches, museums and a cathedral. The over a century old city park is a popular venue that exudes a unique ambience.

Hills, dunes and waves

Charming farming villages and green hills speckled with almond, fig and orange trees await trippers to inner Algarve. Anyone in search of nature at its absolute best will find it in the Ria Formosa nature reserve. The Algarve coast with its lagoons and dunes is, unsurprisingly, also hugely popular among water sports enthusiasts. The distinctive ochre cliffs, some protruding directly out of the sea, are a particular attraction for scuba divers. The same cliffs provide an impressive backdrop for boat excursions. In sum: if savouring freshly caught and grilled sardines, while being gently rocked by the waves, sounds like heaven on earth, then the Algarve is the place to go.
