Filming Location Dubrovnik: A Voyage of Discovery to the Famous Film Sets
Game of Thrones - A Journey to King's Landing
The US fantasy television series Game of Thrones is one of the most successful of recent years and deals with politics, power struggles, wars, religion, and social relations. In many parts of the series, the Croatian port city of Dubrovnik serves as the setting of King's Landing. The locals know how to take advantage of this and offer different guided tours to the filming locations.
City Wall of Dubrovnik
The approximately two-kilometre-long city wall encircles the old town of Dubrovnik and is one of the best preserved fortification systems in Europe. The wall plays an important role in several key events in the GoT cult series. A tour of the wall is an absolute highlight and offers many wonderful views of the city. You should allow a good two hours for this.
Minčeta Tower
The Minčeta Tower is the highest point of the city wall and served as the "House of the Immortals" in the series. For many tourists, the tower is a popular photo spot, and they recreate the famous film scenes in their pictures.
Fortress Lovrijenac
The Lovrijenac Fortress is transformed into the king's residence for Game of Thrones. The medieval structure was an important stronghold, both in the series and in actuality. It has also become a prominent landmark of Dubrovnik.
Pile Gate
The Pile Gate is the entrance to Dubrovnik's Old Town and once fulfilled an important defensive function. As it is the main entrance to Dubrovnik’s old town, this is where most visitors first encounter the city's medieval architecture. Among other things, the GoT scene in which King Joffrey is attacked by his people was created at the city gate.
Jesuit Stairs
The beautiful baroque staircase leads up to the Jesuit Church of St. Ignatius. A very famous scene of Game of Thrones – the "Walk of Shame" of the king's mother Cersei Lannister, who had to take public buses – was filmed there.
Rector’s Palace
The former seat of power of the old Republic of Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. The palace is located in the middle of the old town and in the GoT cult series, the rich spice king of the magnificent Quarth lived here.
Blackwater Bay
Just a few minutes' walk from the Pile Gate is the small Blackwater Bay. It offers the same view that the king’s mother of Game of Thrones had at the sad farewell of her beloved daughter Myrcella. When filming is not in progress, there is a canoe rental shop in the bay.
Lokrum Island
A 15-minute boat ride away from the harbour of the old town is the island of Lokrum. This was the trading town of Quarth in the GoT series. In actuality, the island is uninhabited and only peacocks strut between the pine trees. This is the perfect place to enjoy some peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of the old town.
Star Wars – The Last Jedi
In addition to the filming of Game of Thrones, Dubrovnik was one of the prominent film locations of "Star Wars - The Last Jedi" in 2016. Filming took place on the main street Stradun, at the Dominican Monastery, in Pustijerna Street, and in the Rector's Palace. These sights are all located in the historic old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Robin Hood Origins
The filmmakers of Robin Hood Origins also chose the Croatian coastal city as the set for the blockbuster. In the remake of the story about the "King of Thieves", places like the Stradun and the eastern entrance to the old town (Ploce Gate) can be seen. Furthermore, it features the city wall and the city harbour of Dubrovnik.
