A City for Culture Lovers, Sun Worshippers and TV Series Fans

Dubrovnik in southern Croatia is referred to as the “Pearl of the Adriatic” for good reason. Ideally suited for family and beach holidays, this city on the Dalmatian coast is also a “must-see” for history and culture buffs.

The entire ancient city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Numerous historical buildings line the main street “Stradun”. The more than one-mile long, walkable city wall is one of the most important landmarks and includes five fortresses. One of them, Lovrijenac, served as a location for filming “Game of Thrones”. Many scenes of this American fantasy drama television series were shot in Dubrovnik and city tours are on offer accordingly.

A scuba diving paradise

With year-round warm weather and little rainfall, Dubrovnik is a choice place for both sun worshippers and water sports lovers. Considered one of the nicest diving regions of the Adriatic, the underwater world around Dubrovnik is inhabited by marine animals rarely seen further north.

But excursions on land are no less thrilling – along the coastal road to Makarska with its historic town centre, for instance. Or to Orebić on the Pelješac Peninsula, from where the island of Korčula with its dense oak and pine forests can easily be reached. The house in which the famous seafarer Marco Polo is believed to have been born is also on Korčula.

Pristine nature on Mljet

Excursions to the islands of Mljet and Lokrum are highly recommended. The latter is a nature reserve with abundant forest vegetation and lovely beaches. Considered one of the most beautiful islands of the Adriatic, Mljet attracts visitors with a National Park that beguiles with pristine nature and many rare bird species.

Delightful Old Town and a Hinterland Waiting to Be Explored
Show

And last but certainly not least: the region also has plenty to offer in the culinary domain. Croatian cuisine is very varied and includes local must-tries such as wine, cheese and the famous Dalmatian ham.
