In Aphrodite’s Realm

Paphos, the fourth-largest city on the island of Cyprus, was selected as a European Capital of Culture for 2017 – by virtue of its historic heritage, but also because of its alluringly modest charm.

Paphos is the perfect place for culture buffs: the coastal city offers a seemingly infinite choice of sights, including the Tombs of the Kings, the ruins of Paphos (which enjoy UNESCO World Heritage status), the Paphos Archaeological Park and the medieval castle by the harbour.

The beach of the goddess of love

It is not hard to fathom why southwestern Cyprus is also a choice destination for a beach holiday. Paphos’ most popular beach is Coral Bay: protected from strong currents by the surrounding cliffs, it is ideal for families. Having said that, thanks to its central location and the regular beach parties held there in the summer months, Coral Bay fans also include young adults and couples. The Paphos Municipal Beach is another centrally located spot and where many locals choose to swim. The rock formations beneath the waves also make this city beach an interesting spot for scuba divers.

Petra tou Romiou between Paphos and Limassol is one of the island’s most beautiful beaches. According to legend, it is where Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, rose from the sea.

Sports and culture on Mount Olympus

The climate in and around Paphos is typically Mediterranean, which means hot summers and mild winters. The weather is often very dry. Between autumn and spring, the area is ideal for cycling and hiking holidays. The interior of the island hosts the Troodos Mountains, of which Mount Olympus rising up to 1952 metres is the highest peak and even offers opportunities for skiing in winter.

The Troodos Mountains are also home to the Kykkos Monastery at 1140 metres above sea level. The monastery came to fame primarily because of the miraculous icon of Virgin Mary, said to have brought rain in times of drought. Kykkos can be visited, although entry into the monastery requires strictly appropriate clothing. Those who prefer to party are well provided for in Ayia Napa, which is about a two-hour drive from Paphos. Boasting particular popularity among the younger generation, this town and resort in the southeast of the island is famous for its endless string of bars and clubs. Whether culture, beach life or partying – southern Cyprus has something to suit all preferences.
