Sherry, Horses and Plenty of Sunshine

Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia is known for two things: fortified wine and horses. The town is the cradle of Spanish sherry (“Jerez” in Spanish). Accordingly, some of its main attractions are sherry bodegas that offer guided tours and sherry tastings.

But this historic city also features a cathedral and several other churches worth visiting, such as the Church of San Miguel or the Church of San Dionisio. The oldest building in the city is the massive Alcázar fortress, originally built in the eleventh century. Motorsports fans will, of course, want to inspect Jerez’s racing circuit. This is where the annual Spanish motorcycle Grand Prix, which is part of the F.I.M. Grand Prix motorcycle racing season, takes place.

But the most globally renowned landmark of Jerez de la Frontera is the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art. Its stables are home to the finest purebred horses which are trained to perform spectacular dressage programmes. The annual horse fair (“Feria del Caballo”) is traditionally held in early May and includes a procession, tournaments and competitions.

Bathing on the Costa de la Luz coast

Nestled between the sea and the mountains, Jerez de la Frontera is no distance from the Costa de la Luz where lovely beach holidays can be enjoyed – in Cádiz, the capital of the province, for instance, which is less than a thirty-minute drive from Jerez. Cádiz has some beautiful beaches to bask on, including: Cortadura, La Victoria (city beach) and Santa María del Mar, which is popular among surfers because of its breaking waves. Those eager to spend time in Málaga can reach this tourist stronghold in about two and a half hours by car.

By the way: Costa de la Luz boasts 300 days of sunshine a year – as its name (“Coast of the Light”) suggests.
