More than Salsa, Rum and Cigars

The end of the diplomatic ice age with the US has marked the start of a new era in Cuba. Despite growing tourism, this Caribbean island has not lost any of its charm.

Cuba has made global history. The revolutionary leaders Che Guevara and Fidel Castro are still the nation’s greatest heroes: the Che Guevara Mausoleum in Santa Clara is one of Cuba’s most impressive landmarks. Among other things, socialism has preserved the 1950s pizzazz of this Caribbean island state.

See and be seen in a vintage convertible

On that note, hardly anything beats getting to know the Cuban capital of Havana in a legendary vintage convertible car: the historic city centre, the Malecón esplanade or Morro Castle from where visitors can enjoy superb vistas. Thanks to Cuba’s subtropical climate, the weather is consistently good and water temperatures are always about twenty degrees Celsius. ;;; In sum, it’s the ideal beach holiday choice. Havana’s city beaches are primarily about “seeing and being seen“. For those who prefer something more tranquil, there are the beaches outside the city to relish. Luxurious hotel complexes can be found in Varadero which is also Cuba’s most popular beach resort. The Cayo islands of Cayo Largo, Cayo Santa Maria and Cayo Coco bedazzle visitors with their stunning powdery-white beaches, turquoise lagoons and crystal-clear waters.

Action, sound and smoke

Cuba’s west coast is a diver’s paradise. The island is also worth exploring on foot or by bicycle. Sailing trips and cruises around the island are another popular draw, including detours to neighbouring islands such as Jamaica. And in the evening, as the sun sets into the sea, just picture yourself with a glass of rum and a cigar in hand, with salsa music playing in the background!
