Hiking, Cycling, Swimming – The All-Encompassing Island

Sardinia’s multifaceted regions boast a rich diversity of vegetation and culture. The island capital of Cagliari is situated on the southern tip of this Italian holiday paradise and attracts with seductive beaches, historic sights and impressive cliffs.

Built on seven hills, just like Rome, Cagliari offers a lovely blend of big town and medieval architecture. Besides diving, sailing, wind- and kitesurfing, it is also a great place for hiking, cycling and horseback riding. The Sella del Diavolo promontory nearby is definitely worth exploring on foot, as is the Parco dei Sette Fratelli where Sardinian deer can be seen grazing.

From cliffs to pebble beaches

Blessed with an amiable Mediterranean climate, swimming in the sea is possible even during the early months of the year in southern Sardinia. The island is renowned for its beautiful coastlines and spectacular beaches which include: the famous Costa Smeralda and Costa Paradiso in the north, Costa Rei with translucent turquoise water in the east, the Costa Verde nature haven in the west and Cagliari’s fabulous Poetto beach in the south. Worthy of special mention is the UNESCO protected beach of Cala Goloritzè which features fine, white pebbles and may only be accessed on foot or by sea.

Excursion into antiquity

The city of Cagliari is a treat for history enthusiasts. The Old Town is home to ancient towers and churches, an amphitheatre and a cathedral. Spectacular panoramic views are offered from the terrace of the San Remy Bastion. By the way: Sardinia boasts the world’s highest concentration of centenarians. Could this longevity be climate-related? Or is it owed to Sardinia’s delicious Pecorino cheese and red wine perhaps?
